Ask the experts: How to prevent winter hair damage

Updated: Jan 25, 2022

We do all we can to protect ourselves from the cold - we reach for our favourite cosy jumper, feel the warmth of a soft scarf against our chin and apply bigger dollops of moisturiser on our skin. But so often our hair can feel neglected. As a woman with short hair I often find it a struggle to keep my hair looking fresh and stylish when harsh elements are against me.

So how can we keep our hair looking salon fresh especially over the next few months? With ten salons across London, I spoke to Lee, stylist and co-owner of Blue Tit - an award winning and very aesthetically pleasing, tranquil and friendly hairdressers, about how to look after our hair this winter.

What are your 5 tips for preventing winter hair damage?

Lee: We all tend to style our hair more in the Winter,so Heat protector, using a lower heat on the hair dryer and good styling products, its always down to the styling products and whatever you’re going to prevent damage with always starts with your shampoo and conditioner to then thermal protector

Lucy: So don’t scrimp on stuff like that

Lee Beever, Co-owner and Stylist caught up with Lucy.

Lee: Yeah, dont scrimp, people think buying high street brands is going to be just as good as buying a professional brand, you will always get more protection from a professional brand since they are catering it to a professional styling tool

Lucy: For hair thats harder to manage like mine, shorter hair, that you can’t put up or curly hair that can easily go frizzy what would you recommend?

Lee: Products. Work with it. Work with the natural textures, a hair cut should always work with whats happening natural, so if you've got naturally curly hair a good hair cut will help style it in a good way a bad hair cut will not compliment, it needs to be complimentary. Work with it.

A truly relaxing experience at Blue Tit Greenwich

Lucy: What products are you loving at the moment?

Lee: Sea salt spray is a big old faithful, creates texture, movement, gives the edge on the natural grit, that is needed for styling and body. Sea Salt spray by Oway is all natural, biodynamically formed and you’re not putting to much on to create that texture you want, like some other brands.

Lucy: Do you sell Oway here?

Lee:Yes, we sell Oway ‘Organic way’ everything is biodynamic and sustainable, so we do refills on all the shampoos and conditioners and clients then receive 25% off products when they bring their bottles in to be refilled

Lucy: Ahh thats cool! I use the Bungee fibre and I think thats fab!

Lucy: Thanks Lee! .x
