Discover the perfect white tee with Lucy

Updated: Oct 22, 2022

Having worked alongside Lucinda Chambers (Ex Fashion Editor of British Vogue) in 2018 I asked her if she could offer me one piece of fashion advice what would it be? Her reply was "Invest in a good white tee."This is something that has stuck with me ever since and is something I stress to all my clients.

We are happy to spend money on makeup, shoes, bags but basics, real basics seem to fall by the waistline but when you think about it, a basic item such as the perfect white tee can really finish off an outfit, make it look polished, refined and complete.

Here are my top 5 White Teeshirts currently available.

Arket:

Since moving to London at the beginning of 2018 Arket has become a real key player within my

Personal Shops (you also need to check out their homewear too!) Arket is part of the H&M group together with COS, Monki, & Other Stories and Weekday.

I have a included the Arket basic white tee within many of my Personal Shops and my Mum swears by it too. I remember she wore hers lots this summer with a midi pleated skirt and trainer. Being light in weight makes them great for layering, or wearing under a simple blazer, jeans and trainers for an androgynous chilled vibe.

£15

COS:

I think I mentioned my love for COS in one of the first Style Blogs I posted for Style By. COS is very much my go to for basics, when I did a Personal shop last week together with the reel I mentioned that we went to COS for cashmere jumpers, however, its great for Teeshirts too. V neck or Scoop depending on body shape and boob size, I tend to always go for a round neck. I flit between sizes depending on what I need it for, either a S or M, I hate the look of a fitted tee, I feel they look more chic yet relaxed if you go a size bigger I love COS teeshirts since they are not too long in the body, I always like to tuck a teeshirt into my jeans or wide leg trousers and being not too long enables there not to be too much bulk tucked in.COS tee’s wash really well and keep their shape too.

Uniqlo:

I always visit here for simple additions to my wardrobe, I paid a visit last week and purchased a taupe merino wool sweater and some gym gear. Uniqlo is great for gym gear. The fact that I don't tend to go to the gym too often (I hate the gym!) I didn't want to spend a fortune on the premium gym labels. The Uniqlo basics also wash really well too! When I went to Iceland earlier on in the year, Uniqlo was the first place I went to get my thermals!

However, back to the perfect white tee, Uniqlo are a great brand when it comes to sustainability. Their Supima Cotton is grown by family owned farms in the USA. They use state of the art technology to make sure the cotton is grown in an efficient way, with laser technology that maximises water usage and satellite systems that will identify any nutrient deficiencies- the result? A fabric which is stronger, of high quality and a garment that is made to last. I love the £15 classic white teeshirt.

Jigsaw:

Jigsaw was the first ‘investment white tee that I purchased after Lucinda’s advice and it was the teeshirt that I told all of my friends to buy and my Mum. The Jigsaw Supima Cotton T-Shirt, is great! Priced at £25 and like all of the Tee shirts mentioned is 100% cotton and machine washable.

This Tee has quite a low crew neckline, one of my favourite necklines for a teeshirt as I find the shape super flattering. If I'm wearing a necklace, I like my jewellery to sit on my skin rather than on the fabric and this neckline provides just the right amount of skin.

Overall this tee is light and breathable in cotton and slips on well with tonal denim ready for the autumn.

John Lewis

The John Lewis own brand fashion assortment has really come into its own over the past couple of years and this very much includes their basics, whether that be their teeshirts or their knitwear. I would say that their T shirts tend to be on the thicker side, so if you wanted something more for under a suit/blazer jacket, these t shirts would be ideal. Again they come in a variety of different necklines, a square neck seems to be quite popular within the John Lewis collection.

Their And/OR collection is a great casual edit to shop, I have bought many a piece from this brand. The White Tank Tee priced at £20 being one of them, I also have it in black too! (it does also come in grey!)
