Having a petite figure, I often get asked if I struggle to find clothes that fit? And I can honestly say that dont, shoes are a different matter altogether! But seriously, it's all about having a good tailor that you trust, it took me a while once I had moved to London to find somebody who I really trusted in altering and tailoring my clothes, someone that would be efficient with the attention to detail was key. I genuinely fit a standard size 8, however, I often need trousers shortening together with sleeves. But going back to 'do I struggle to find clothes to fit my size'... I don't. It's all about dressing for your shape and as long as everything is in proportion, all should be well.
"I can't do oversized because I'm short. WRONG!"
I have often had clients say to me 'I can't do oversized because I am short' WRONG. Oversized is literally my favourite trend and you will see from the pictures that I post on instagram, a lot of my go to looks tend to be 'oversize.'' Like I said it's all about proportions, so if you are going to do an oversized shirt, team it with a wet look legging, french tuck it into a boyfriend jean. The 'oversized' trend hit the catwalk with brands such as Balengica and Marc Jacobs, however it really has taken over the highstreet, think COS, KIN by John Lewis just to name a couple.
"I can't do 'cropped trousers' because I am short."
This is another statement that I often hear, however, today I am wearing a pair of leather culottes which I LOVE (last season Zara) and I have teamed them with a boxy t shirt that I have tucked in. The secret to a cropped trouser is have you ankles out aka don't wear a boot or a sock, showing your ankle because this will add length and will also make the outfit appear more fluid. Whenever I wear a cropped trouser, I usually team them either with a loafer or a trainer (again no socks)
Last summer I practically lived in what I called 'buffett dresses' Uniqlo, ARKET and KIN (from John Lewis) were all really great and if you want to treat yourself Rails did a great range, which I can see them doing again this season. Again, own it. Keep legs bare and team with a sandal or chunky trainer.
I had a client literally a couple of days ago who said she 'couldn't wear a boyfriend blazer because of her height. Simple tip, you can as long as you wear it open, if you close a jacket, it will cut you in half and can make you look top heavy, this goes for trench coats, blazers and long line cardigans, worn open, looks chic, effortless and keeps everything streamline.
