Key pieces to update your Spring Wardrobe.

Updated: Jan 25, 2022

You can feel that change is coming. The easing of lockdown, the milder weather, the longer days. It feels as though the light is finally arriving.

With the change in season approaching, many women look at their wardrobe for inspiration. We're no longer wanting to reach for thick knitwear. Like Spring, we're wanting to feel fresh in what we wear. Like we have an exciting wardrobe waiting for us. For some, it can be a time where you feel overwhelmed with what you have in your wardrobe. You can feel uninspired; the thought of choosing an outfit is exhausting in itself (see decision fatigue from the last blog post) and that voice inside creeps in: ' I have nothing to wear.'

Updating your wardrobe for Spring needn't be a case of 'out with the old and in with the new.' A few simple key pieces can refresh your closet. It's important when updating your wardrobe to not be lead by trends. Don't let what you see everywhere in the high street influence your decision about what you should wear. It's important to purchase items that will suit your style and compliment what you already have.

If you're after a refresh for the new season - here are my favourites when it comes to transitional dressing.

1. UPGRADE YOUR COMFIES.

Like the rest of us, I've lived in my sweatpants throughout the whole of lockdown. If like me, the thought of wearing denim makes you want to re-hibernate then don't wear them! Instead opt for a softer material or a cut that'll flatter your shape.

High rise, wide leg trousers will help elevate your bottom half. If you choose a monochromatic outfit it will also make you appear taller. I love this look from & Other Stories (pictured) Accessorise with simple gold hoops. Slip your hair into a slick pony tail and you'll be ready to take on the day.

If the thought of anything fastening in the middle still puts you off then why not opt for a casual cargo trouser? Hush is my go to store for comfort when it comes to dressing for the bottom half. I love these khaki trousers from their new SS/21 collection. (Pictured below.) Featuring an elasticated waist, they could be dressed down with your favourite trainer and simple tee, or dressed up with a black blazer, cami and heel for that long awaited catch up with the girls.

2. THE TRENCH.

I don't know anything more timeless than a classic trench coat. Working with any outfit for any occasion - there's a reason why they've stood the test of time. Invest in a trench if you can. Whilst the classic Burberry trench will set you back at least £1,500 it will be a statement piece that will last forever in your wardrobe. If you don't want to commit to the designer price tag, then there are ways you can have a piece of designer in your wardrobe for a fraction of the price. Apps such as Vestiaire sell premium pre-loved clothes. All clothes get quality checked and are physically verified by the apps experts. Having purchased a never been worn vintage Burberry trench this year myself, I can confirm that this app really does pride itself on selling top quality products by their sellers.

3. THE ALL YEAR ROUND DRESS.

I've really developed a love for finding that perfect dress that will see me through the year. I get a sense of excitement when I think of the different ways I can wear it throughout the year. With over the knee boots for AW, my new white Reebok Classics for Spring, to an elegant heel for those summer nights, it's style in an instant. I tend to shop for my dress round about now. I feel Spring offers the best selection. There's more options with colour, shape and design.

Most of my dresses are plain. I find it easier to make a dress work multiple ways if I'm working with a simple canvas. They also tend to be slightly oversized as I always feel more comfortable and confident when it's shaped in this way.

4. THE BLAZER.

Anyone that knows me knows how much of an advocate I am for a blazer. There's

no reason why you shouldn't have one in your wardrobe. From dressing up that working from home look, to meeting up with your girls - a blazer is the ultimate piece for transitional dressing. Whether you want to go sharp and structured to loose and soft, there's a blazer to suit all body types.

To inject a bit of fun into the classic tee and jeans look, why not try out a coloured blazer? It'll instantly elevate your outfit. If you're not sure on what colours suit you then why not get a colour analysis? A complimentary colour analysis is carried out with every Style by Kate appointment. Book here.

5. THE MID HEEL.

For most of us it's been a while since we've worn a heel. Slippers and trainers have been my go to for the last 12 months. However I love how a heel makes me feel. When you find that perfect pair, they can heighten your confidence (not to mention that sassy strut you do in them.) But lets be kind and ease our feet into it shall we? There's so many beautiful mid heel shoes out there for this season. Have a look at open toe as well as closed toe options. Play around with colour and style. They can dress up even the simplest of outfits.
