With the change of weather approaching; the sun now shining through our window in the morning and dusk approaching that little bit later in the day we want to get excited about what we're going to put on for the day ahead. But more often than not a new season can throw our own sense of style into disarray along with disregarded clothes being thrown on the floor during the process.
Well, you're not alone. Many feel the same at the start of the new season. We want to get excited about styles and many of my clients have been uncertain on how to wear them. So this will hopefully enlighten you on not only how to wear the latest trends but how to wear them ALL year round - thus creating that capsule wardrobe.
TRENDS
It's important to remember that as exciting as it is to look at the new trends which are coming onto the high street - to only really adapt the trends that really get you excited. The golden rule to style is - DO NOT follow a trend because everyone else is. It has to work in your wardrobe along with the other clothes you have. Otherwise you end up having clothes and styles in your wardrobe that don't work together.
DENIM
With the likes of Chanel showcasing denim in their SS20 show it's fair to say that denim has definitely had an upgrade this Spring.
And we're not just talking jeans here - think skirts, dresses tailored jackets and my personal favourite, the jumpsuit.
Denim is so versatile, which is why it's been around for so long. Not only is it a hard wearing fabric but it literally goes with anything and everything.
However, the thought of being in a fitted skirt or jeans, especially on those bloated, premenstrual days, can make us think twice about picking it from our wardrobe. A more relaxed look such as this light denim boiler suit from Arket would be a fab addition to any denim collection. A tie waist is perfect for cinching you in to add shape but it's also great for controlling how tight or how lose you want an outfit to be.
Top Tip for Denim.
To maintain the shape and colour of your denim always wash on a cool cycle and make sure all denim garments are turned inside out beforehand.
THROWBACK - THE 70'S
Now this is a trend that is really getting me excited for Spring. Not only is there a rainbow of colour out there but the cut of items are mesmerising. When it comes to this throwback decade, think everything and anything 70's; from bohemian to disco.
This season I'll be looking for the perfect flared jean. From delicate, crochet tops to that 70's disco collar, they'll be no hiding from this era on the high street but make sure that it's a trend that's going to work for you in your wardrobe. If you're not sure on where to start but like the idea of embracing something vintage inspired, start small. Try experimenting with your accessories first. There's some amazing jewellery for SS20 (pearls are everywhere ) and it can instantly give an existing outfit a totally new vibe.
Where to shop?
This trend is a great opportunity to take advantage of pre loved items. Thrift and charity shops are the perfect place to find those vintage gems.
GOING DOTTY.
The only way you may have missed the biggest trend of this season is if you've lite
rally been hiding under a rock. The likes of Balenciaga and Gucci were amongst the brands rocking this famous spot over the runway. A trend that really anybody can wear - the polka dot is the look for Spring. From small dots, to big dots, to everything else in-between, it's everywhere. Like leopard print it's a look that rarely vanishes from the high street as its timeless and will always be a good addition to a capsule wardrobe.
Top tip
Be adventurous and play around with this print. Many dresses this season have incorporated leopard print and polka dots on the same outfit. Go bold and have some fun with it!
I'VE GOT THE POWER
Along with the 70's era, another trend I'm in awe of this season is 'The Power Suit.' A nod to the 90's suiting has been seen everywhere on the runway. Dolce and Gabanna, Valentino and Tom Ford were lovers of bright suiting whilst other brands favoured oversizing - with a particular emphasis on shoulders.
I love the power of a suit for many reasons. They can be worn as a co-ord or as
separates,
Nothing says effortless chic than an oversized jacket teamed with your favourite jeans.
And the power of a sharp, bright suit can be the answer to that unique wedding guest outfit you've been looking for. A coloured suit can not only make you stand out from a crowd but the power of wearing the right colour can literally knock years off you! ( Watch my video on 'the power of colour' on IGTV for more colour tips!)
GOING GREEN
The Pantone colour for Spring /Summer 20 is Classic Blue. This is a colour that's really getting me excited. It suits every skin tone - so it should be a colour that anyone can wear.
If the thought of wearing a bold and confident colour such as a strong blue isn't your thing then why not try green? From sage to forest green, this is a colour that you can really experiment with. Putting sage green with your staple colours such as your whites, blacks and greys can bring real sophistication to a look.
As well as green being a colour to be seen in - botanical prints are also a huge look for this season. Errr hello JLO for Versace 2020's runway show?
Top Tip
If you're unsure on where to start with green then start small. If you're uncertain that the type of green you're wanting to experiment with suits you then hold it up next to your face. If you feel it's washing you out then opt for a wide neckline or break up the colour with a statement necklace or pair of earrings to add warmth to your complexion.
THE BIGGER THE BETTER
Good news for all those ladies who need their whole life in their bags - big bags are back! Time to put your miniatures away - because when it comes to your bag the bigger the better for this season! So next time you leave the house for the morning commute with your workout gear next to your laptop in your bag you'll be as stylish as can be! Hurray!
