Why styling during transitional seasons makes us reassess our wardrobe.

Autumn is just around the corner. Have you ever met a person who doesn't love this time of year? I'll admit it - I'm not even massively into a pumpkin spiced latte - just keep mine an oat milk extra shot but I LOVE this time of year for style. For me transitional styling is my favourite time to style clients because of the endless possibilities you can style one item.

What is transitional styling?

In simple terms it's dressing for a new season when you're not quite out the old season. It's the in-between weather. It's "it's a bit chilly I need to grab a jumper but I'm out later and looks like it might warm up" style.

And this is where the issues with styling for the in-between season lie. So many clients I see struggle with layering pieces and how to wear items different ways. Our wardrobe has to work extra hard when the weather is so unpredictable. It requires thought and for many women and men , not only can it be a challenge but it's also something we don't have extra time for.

How do we approach style through a changing season?

1. Look at what you currently have in your wardrobe. What is it that you enjoy wearing? Ask yourself what is it about it: Fabric? Comfort? Colour? All of the mentioned? Doing this before a shop is a good way of identifying your style uniform and what it is you enjoy wearing. Look at accessories too.

2. Time to go shopping. When you're in a shop it can feel really overwhelming. This is probably one of the main issues my clients have. They don't know what they are shopping for.

Top tip: When you see something you like ask yourself; how can I wear this not just for autumn / winter but for Spring / Summer too? Can I layer this with a blazer I already have? Take a moment to think about what it is that you already have in your wardrobe. Do I need another top? Or is it coats / jackets that I actually need?

3. Take time to really look at what you're wearing.

This is something I say all the time to clients. When you are trying something on don't just look at it with what you're currently styling it with and whip it off in ten seconds ( unless you really don't like it.) Ask yourself "How is this making me feel? What else can I wear it with when the weather gets colder? What shoes do I have that can change this style up?

We need to be one step ahead in our minds when it comes to style. It may feel overwhelming at first but if you can get into the habit of taking your time when shopping, really looking at what it is you need, how you can layer pieces on top of one another, how you can adapt a look through the seasons, then you really will be starting to think like a stylist.
